8 key parts, one program, and your phone

What it is

Four weighing caster cups under an existing bed, plus a small display on the footboard.

What it does

  • Logs every position change
  • Reminds when a turn is due
  • Alerts when a resident gets up at night
  • Says when someone is not back

Who it's for

Families caring at home, and care homes worried about night falls.

What you see in the app

One screen for each job TurnCup does.

  • Turn remindersMum rolls onto her right side by herself at 02:10. The cups see it and reset the clock, so the carer is woken only when a turn is due.

  • Edge of bedIn a care home, a resident at risk sits up on the edge of the bed at night. The weight moves to one side and the night carer is alerted.

  • Not backThe resident in room 15 left the bed and has not come back within the home's 15-minute limit. The night carer is asked to check.

App screens with sample data. The interface is in development.

What the app gets

Data TurnCup sends to the app

No camera and no microphone. The app shows turns, never the person's weight unless a nurse enables it.

CAD design · Rev A design complete (stages 1-6) plus rev A1 NightWatch (26 Oct 2026: staged bed-exit alerts, not-back timer, FloorWatch ceiling radar), all hardware fit-checked in CAD, not built; bed-patient monitor KMI is FDA Class I and 510(k)-exempt, but no fall-prevention or pressure-injury claim is made

    Lab updates for TurnCup

    All lab updates
    1. LatestA care home or ward needs one thing at each bed that calls a resident getting up before they stand, someone on the floor and what a call is for, and fills the turn, fluid and hand-rub records, without a camera in a private room. CQC asks for the least intrusive option, a bed-exit signal is a Class I exempt bed-patient monitor (21 CFR 880.2400), and homes pay about $240 a room + $19.99 a month for a wall radar (Vayyar) on top of mats and call bells.

      • New product page: https://iemilabs.com/products/bedside/

See it in 3DFull research and design

    3. Care homes need to know before a resident at risk of falling is up at night, without the false alarms of sensor mats, and to find a resident on the floor fast when night staff are few. One trial found 35% of bed-exit alarms under traditional practice were false, Health Technology Wales found the evidence for mats uncertain, and University of Sheffield interviews with 15 care-home managers (BGS 2026) found long lies are worst overnight.
      • New CAD parts: FloorWatch ceiling pod case and lid with a 1.5 mm radar window; 13 bought-part checks pass, lid and case touch with 0 mm³ overlap
      • Hardware: Seeed 60 GHz fall-detection radar kit with an ESP32-C6, USB adapter and ceiling trunking; FloorWatch about $47.50 per room at qty 1 (est.), target $79
      • Software: per-resident alert stage (sit-up, edge or out of bed), a not-back-in-bed timer on the home's own limit, and FLOOR alerts only while the bed is empty
      • Design doc: dated section with 5 new sources, exit-stage, floor-coverage and power reports and 4 new tests; product page summary, highlights, use cases, specs and FAQs updated

See it in 3DFull research and design

    4. Repositioning adherence is poor and the paper chart is often one signature per shift (an NJ appellate case called that inadequate) → every position change is logged automatically with time, side and who did it, and the carer only taps when the sensor can't see a change
      • New design: 5 printed parts in code CAD, bought parts fit-checked
      • Market research, hardware list and use case written up
      • Design page and kit render published

    TurnCup FAQ

    General FAQ
    Is TurnCup available?

No. TurnCup is a concept in the in-house design and testing stage. It has not been built or tested under a real bed, and it has no ship date yet.

    Does it prevent pressure injuries?

No. TurnCup logs position changes and reminds carers on a schedule set by the person's nurse or doctor. It does not check skin, does not move the person, and does not replace skin checks or clinical advice.

    Does it prevent falls?

No. NightWatch tells the night carer when a resident sits up, sits on the edge, leaves the bed, is not back in time, or is low on the floor beside the bed. It gives staff time to come, but it cannot stop a fall and does not detect injury.

Will it go off when a resident just turns over?

It should not. A turn moves weight sideways with no drop in total weight, while sitting on the edge takes 9–20 kg off the bed as the feet reach the floor. These rules are still to be tested with volunteers.

    Is FloorWatch a camera?

No. It is a 60 GHz radar on the ceiling that reports only presence and "low and still", never images. It is only listened to while the cups say the bed is empty, so a person lying in bed cannot set it off.

How often will it remind me?

Only at the interval in the care plan, which the nurse or doctor sets. TurnCup never suggests an interval. If the person changes position on their own, the clock resets.

    Will it fit our bed?

It is designed for casters up to 75 mm and legs up to 50 mm square or 70 mm round. It raises the bed about 25 mm and needs locked casters, so add a note to the fall-risk plan. Some bed types still need testing.

    Does it use a camera?

No. There is no camera or microphone, and nothing touches the person. The cups measure weight under the bed legs; the optional FloorWatch radar reports presence only.
