What it is
A battery sensor head for an orchard frost post, with a house bell and fan link.
What it does
Who it's for
Orchard and vineyard growers fighting frost, and greenhouse and tunnel growers fighting wet leaves at dusk.
The idea
The problem today
Orchard and vineyard growers start wind machines from one air probe at one setting all spring, or a frost alarm that rings at one air temperature. On clear, calm nights the buds run colder than the air, and early in spring the buds can take far more cold than the setting, so fans burn fuel on nights they are not needed and still miss the cold pocket at the low end of the block.
With FrostMast
A head on the frost post reads the air, the dew point, the bud by infrared and the clear sky; a second head on the wind machine tower reads the warm air above. It rings the house and asks the fan to start only when the buds are near their kill point for the stage the grower set, and only if there is warm air to bring down. Small stakes find the cold pockets, and the machine's own safety stays in charge.
How the parts connect
Every part, what links it to the brain, and how the data reaches your phone. A solid line is a cable; a dashed line is a radio link.
The program
void loop() {
ir_power(true); // load switch on
air = sht45.read(); // I2C: temperature, humidity
bud = mlx_bud.objectTemp();
sky = mlx_sky.objectTemp();
ir_power(false);
dew = dew_point(air.t, air.rh);
state = next_state(state, bud, sky - air.t, crit_temp);
frame = pack(head_id, seq++, air.t, dew, bud, sky - air.t, batt());
lora_send(aes128(frame, farm_key)); // 12 bytes
deep_sleep(state == FROST_NIGHT ? 60 : 300); // seconds
}To your phone

One screen for each job FrostMast does.
Frost nightA clear, still night in April. The buds in block 4 cool faster than the air, so the bell rings in the house and asks Fan 2 to start.
Sprinkler startOn a dry frost night, sprinklers started late can cool the buds further. The bell says when to start, from the wet bulb, not the air.
Cold pocketsCold air pools in the low corner of a sloping block. A ColdSpot stake there rings the bell before the mid-block post would.
Greenhouse dewAt dusk in a tunnel, the leaves cool toward the dew point. The DewSpot dummy leaf warns in time to vent and heat.
App screens with sample data. The interface is in development.
| Bud temperature | −1.2 °C | Every 5 min, 1 min on frost nights |
|---|---|---|
| Air and dew point | 1.8 °C, −4.0 °C | Same readings |
| Frost call | 2 rings, fan requested | On rule change |
| Sky minus air | −17 °C, clear | Each reading |
| Head battery | 92% | Each reading |
Readings go by a private LoRa link to your own bell. No cloud account is needed.

From the product lab · ideation phase
No. FrostMast is a concept in the in-house design and testing stage. The CAD design is complete, but nothing has been built or tested in an orchard yet, and all specifications are targets.
Only through the controller's own documented remote-start or start-request input, so its pre-start alarm and shutdowns still run. If a controller has no such input, FrostMast is alert-only. The machine's own auto-start probe stays connected as a backstop.
We make no protection promise. FrostMast monitors, alerts and requests a start. The bud kill points come from extension research tables and are shown as such.
On calm, clear nights cold air drains downhill and pools in the low rows. In the April 2026 freeze, growers in Virginia and Maryland saw 0 to 100% damage inside one vineyard. Our model says a low spot with 5 m of fall can be 1–2 °C colder than a mid-slope post (est.), so the post can say safe while the low rows lose buds. ColdSpot stakes measure those pockets.
No. It measures when a dummy leaf is wet and how close the leaf temperature is to the dew point. Wet leaves for long periods are what extension advisers warn about, but the DewSpot does not see or predict disease. It never moves your vents or heating; it tells you when to.
Your sensor reads the air at head height. On clear nights leaves lose heat to the sky and run 1–2 °C colder, so they can be wet while the air reads safe. Our model says a 90% RH alarm can come up to an hour after the leaves are wet on those nights (est.); the DewSpot reads the leaf side.
They are your own time-stamped temperature records, and you can export them to CSV. No insurer or agency has told us it will accept them, and a temperature reading does not prove buds died; that still needs bud cutting.
Not proven yet. Our CAD model suggests the infrared spot reads 0.5–1.1 °C warm at 0.3–0.8 m because it also sees the ground. We will test it against thermocouples in buds on frost nights before release.
