What it is

A camera head on the yard light pole with one brain that does the forklift, parking, gate and queue jobs for a yard with public access.

What it does

  • Logs forklift near misses and chimes the driver
  • Counts parking bays and overstays
  • Counts vehicles at the gate by type
  • Times the loading queue

Who it's for

Builders' merchants, timber yards, garden centres and small 3PL yards where customers and forklifts share the yard.

The idea

One camera head on the yard light pole logs forklift near misses, bays, gate traffic and the will-call queue

The problem today

In a builders' merchant yard, customers drive in, park and walk among forklifts loading their cars, and a regulator fined a timber yard after a pack fell on a customer. Each job has its own kit today: a reversing camera on every truck, plate reading, traffic counts and queue counters, each with its own fee.

With SafeYard

One SafeYard head on the light pole sees the whole open yard and the gate lane. It logs near misses between people and forklifts, counts bays and gate traffic, measures the will-call wait, and a small TruckTag in each cab chimes and records bumps and the daily check.

  3. 3TruckTag in each forklift cabChimes in the cab when the pole sees a person close behind, logs bumps and runs the daily pre-shift check
  4. 4Queue lines at the will-call doorCount lines drawn on the yard camera measure the wait and send an open-another-lane alert to the counter screen

What you see in the app

One screen for each job SafeYard does.

  • Near missA customer walks behind a reversing forklift at racking bay 4. The driver's TruckTag flashes and chimes, and a 10-second clip is saved.

  • ParkingOn a busy Saturday the yard camera counts which customer bays are full and spots cars that have stayed too long.

  • Gate countsEvery vehicle through the gate is counted by type and by which way it turns, in the same table a traffic survey would give.

  • Loading queueCustomers line up at the loading lane. When the wait passes 8 minutes, the counter is told to open a second lane before the line reaches the street.

App screens with sample data. The interface is in development.

    Lab updates for SafeYard

    All lab updates
    1. LatestBuilders' merchants and timber yards let customers drive in, park and walk among forklifts; New Zealand's regulator fined a timber yard after a pack fell on a customer and asked for real control of pedestrian traffic, while today each job is a separate kit: reversing cameras about $950 a truck, plate reading $35 a camera a month, counters $859-919 each (SafeYard DESIGN.md market check).
      • Drawn idea plan (idea.json): a builders' merchant yard from above, with the gate off the public road, customer bays, timber racking, the loading lane, the walkway and the will-call counter; pins for the SafeYard head on the light pole, its gate camera, the TruckTag in each forklift cab and the queue lines at the will-call door
      • The product picture is now this drawn plan instead of the plain fallback card; drawn from the design notes, not the CAD
      • What the plan keeps from the market work: the pole sees the open yard only, so sites with forklifts inside racking aisles or sheds keep a camera on the truck; people are dots and faces are never stored; plates are read only on paid lots
      • Next: close-out C9 (recommend the first product to the owner) from 30 Oct 00:00; until then more drawn idea plans for catalogue products

    2. A builders’ merchant, timber yard or garden centre lets customers drive in, park, queue at the will-call counter and walk among forklifts. WorkSafe NZ fined a timber yard after a forklift knocked a pack onto a customer and asked yards to control people on foot and show customers where to park. Today each job is a separate tool: about $950 a truck for an AI reversing camera, $35 a month per camera for plate reading, paid processing for traffic counts and $859-919 per people counter.
      • New product SafeYard: one Raspberry Pi 5 + AI HAT+ in a pole head does the jobs of ForkGuard, ParkSense, RoadSense and FlowCount
      • New CAD parts: outdoor pole head case (Pi 5 + AI chip, a wide yard camera and a gate camera behind two windows, PoE+ splitter, gland and vent in the floor) and lid with a sun visor; pole saddle that tilts the head 20° down; TruckTag base and lid (ESP32-C6, impact sensor, LED bar, chime, button, QR check label); every bought part fits and each part is one solid
      • 3D view: a builders’ merchant yard with the head 6 m up the light pole, a forklift reversing out of timber racking with its TruckTag on the guard post, cars in bays, customers queuing at the will-call counter and the gate lane
      • Dropped: the camera unit on every forklift, the ParkSense hub and bullet cameras, the RoadSense battery kit, the two FlowCount ceiling nodes and the forklift reverse-signal wiring
      • Product page https://iemilabs.com/products/safeyard/: $1,490 per yard + $99/month instead of $6,184 + $367/month; parts about $650 a yard (est.)

    SafeYard FAQ

    General FAQ
    Which products does SafeYard replace?

It does the job of ForkGuard (forklift near misses, impacts and pre-shift checks), ParkSense (bays, overstays and payments), RoadSense (gate counts) and FlowCount (queue and wait). Bought separately for one yard with three forklifts those are $6,184 + $367 a month; SafeYard is $1,490 + $99 a month.

Does it stop the forklift or keep people safe?

No. It is not a safety system and it does not slow or stop any truck. The chime in the cab is a driver aid that can be late or miss people. Walkways, exclusion zones and training stay your controls; SafeYard shows where near misses happen so you can fix them.

    What can't it see?

One head sees about 40 x 30 m of open yard from 6 m (est.). Racking aisles, sheds and blind corners need a second head, and forklifts working indoors keep ForkGuard on the truck.

    What about customers' privacy?

There is no face recognition and people show as dots on the map. Plates are read only on paid lots, with signs at the gate. Clips stay on the head for 7 days unless an event is flagged.

    Is SafeYard available now?

No. It is a concept in design. Specifications are targets. We are not taking orders, reservations or deposits, and it has no ship date yet.
