What it is

A solar-powered triangular sticky trap on a stake with a camera that counts insects.

What it does

  • Photographs the sticky card daily
  • Identifies and counts target pests
  • Sends WhatsApp or SMS alerts
  • Maps pest pressure across fields

Who it's for

Orchards, vineyards, smallholders, cooperatives and date farms.

The idea

A delta trap in each pecan block that texts the consultant on the morning of the first moth catch

The problem today

Pecan growers time their casebearer sprays from the first moth caught in pheromone traps, but traps are checked every 3 to 4 days at best, so the first catch is missed by days and growers spray early to be safe. Camera traps on sale cost about $2,400 each, so farms run too few of them.

With PestTrap AI

A camera inside each delta trap's roof photographs the sticky card up to 6 times a day, counts only the new moths since the last photo and sends the count by radio. On the first catch the consultant gets a text with a thumbnail and taps Confirm to set the start date, and the route list shows only the traps that need a visit.

  2. 2PestTrap in block 2The same count per block, so each block gets its own first-catch date instead of one trap per farm
  3. 3PestTrap in block 3 (first catch)Two new moths at 07:00: a thumbnail goes by radio and the consultant gets a text to confirm the catch
  4. 4PestTrap in block 4Flags a full card or an old lure, so the consultant's route list shows only traps that need a visit
  5. 5Co-op radio gateway on the barnHears every trap's small daily counts over long-range radio and passes them on by mobile data
  6. 6Consultant's truck on the farm roadConfirms catches from the phone and pulls full card photos over Wi-Fi when passing a trap

What you see in the app

One screen for each job PestTrap AI does.

  • First catchEarly April in a pecan orchard, the first casebearer moths land on the sticky card. The grower and consultant get a photo the same morning.

  • Daily countsEach morning every trap photographs its card and counts only the new moths, so the consultant can time sprays without driving the trap line.

  • Card changeDust and other insects slowly cover the card. When it gets crowded, the app asks for a fresh card before the counts get unreliable.

App screens with sample data. The interface is in development.

    Lab updates for PestTrap AI

    All lab updates
    1. LatestTexas pecan growers time casebearer sprays from the first moth catch, but Texas A&M advises checking traps every 3 to 4 days, so the first catch is missed by days; camera traps cost about $2,400 a unit (Perennia 2025), so farms run too few (PestTrap DESIGN.md market check).
      • Drawn idea plan (idea.json): a 300-acre pecan orchard from above in four blocks of trees, with the farm road and the barn; pins for a PestTrap in each block (one with the first catch), the co-op radio gateway on the barn and the consultant's truck on the farm road
      • The product picture is now this drawn plan instead of the plain fallback card; drawn from the design notes, not the CAD
      • What the plan keeps from the market work: one trap per block instead of one per farm, small counts by radio with full photos only over Wi-Fi when the consultant passes, and a person confirms the first catch
      • Next: more drawn plans for catalogue products that still show the fallback card (coolercheck, laundryroom), then close-out C5 (buyer review prep for sports) from 12:00

    2. Fruit and wine growers next to woods face three jobs in the same summer: smoke from a fire in the hills, pests to count every week, and crews working in heat under California rules (shade from 80 °F, Cal/OSHA §3395; act on smoke from AQI 151, §5141.1). Agency smoke cameras cost about $50,000 a year, camera traps are sold per trap per season, and a Kestrel heat meter is about $554; our own three products for it cost $5,898 and $224 a month.
      • Combined into FieldEdge (https://iemilabs.com/products/fieldedge/); PestTrap AI itself is unchanged

    PestTrap AI FAQ

    General FAQ
Is image processing done on the trap?

Yes. The STM32N6 identifies and counts insects on the trap, so only counts and a small thumbnail need to be sent over low-power radio. The camera looks only at the sticky card.

    Which pests can it count?

We are training species packs first for common orchard, vineyard and date pests caught on delta sticky traps. Each pack is validated in field trials before release, and more will be added by software update.

    How is it installed?

Push the stake into the ground, hang the trap, add the lure and sticky card, and pair it with the phone app over Bluetooth. It takes about five minutes per trap.

    What connectivity does it need?

PestTrap uses LoRaWAN or NB-IoT/LTE-M. Where there is no LoRaWAN coverage, add one of our gateways to cover several kilometres. Alerts reach growers by WhatsApp or SMS.

    Is PestTrap AI available now?

No. PestTrap AI is a new concept in development. Specifications are target specifications. It is a concept: we are not taking orders, reservations or deposits, and it has no ship date yet.

What warranty will it come with?

We are planning a 2-year limited hardware warranty covering manufacturing defects. Sticky cards and lures are consumables. Final terms will be published before shipping begins.
