What it is

A solar mast with one brain that does four farm jobs at the corner where an orchard block meets the paddock.

What it does

  • Warns of frost at the buds and says when to start the sprinklers
  • Watches the stock trough's water and inflow
  • Scares off crop raiders at the gap and rings the house
  • Counts new moths in the grower's own pheromone trap

Who it's for

Mixed farms and smallholders with fruit trees and stock side by side.

The idea

One solar mast where the orchard meets the paddock: bud frost, the stock trough, raiders at the gap and the moth trap

The problem today

On a mixed farm the frost alarm, the trough monitor, the crop-raid flasher and the pest trap camera are four devices on four posts with four batteries and four apps, about $722 plus $65 a year for our own four. Most growers buy one or none, so a frost night, a stuck float or boar at the gap is found in the morning.

With FarmMast

One mast at the corner reads the buds and the sky, wakes its night camera for animals at the gap and fires the strobe, counts new moths in the trap under its arm, and hears the trough pod on the fence. One morning card in one app says what happened in the night.

  2. 2Trough pod on the rimReads the trough's level and water temperature and the meter on the float line, wired back to the mast; flags a stuck float, a leak or ice
  3. 3Bells in the farmhouseThe frost bell rings when the buds near the set point and the raid bell when animals reach the gap; the morning card goes to the app

  4. Phone app

What you see in the app

One screen for each job FarmMast does.

  • Frost at budsOn a clear spring night the buds on the nearest branch cool fast. The mast says when to start the sprinklers before the damage point.

  • Stock troughThe paddock trough by the mast is refilling after the cattle drink. The meter shows the supply is fine.

  • Animals at gapTwo wild boar walk into the gap between orchard and field. The mast flashes and sounds a random pattern, and the house bell rings.

  • Moth trapThe grower's own pheromone trap hangs under the arm. A camera counts only the new moths on the sticky liner each morning.

App screens with sample data. The interface is in development.

What the app gets

Data FarmMast sends to the app
FrostBuds -1.1 °C · pink stage · clear skyEvery minute on cold nights
Trough82% · filling 14 L/min · 9 °COn change, hourly summary
AnimalsWild boar x2 · east gap · 02:10At once
MothsCodling moth: 4 new this weekEvery morning

Photos stay on the mast; only names, counts and one small liner thumbnail a day are sent. People seen at the gap are logged as 'person' and never sirened or identified.

    Lab updates for FarmMast

    All lab updates
    1. LatestA mixed farm where an orchard block meets a paddock needs frost at the buds, the stock trough, animals at the field gap and moth counts watched together; today that is a $389 to $1,252 frost alarm, a A$749 to A$1,290 trough monitor and a trap camera near $2,700, each on its own post (Onset, fruitweb, Farmbot and iScout listings, sources in DESIGN.md).
      • Drawn idea plan (idea.json): a field corner from above with the end rows of an apple block, the maize field, the hedge gap that boar and deer use, the paddock with its trough and the farmhouse up the track; pins for the mast at the corner, the trough pod and the frost and raid bells in the house
      • The product picture is now this drawn plan instead of the plain fallback card; drawn from the rev A design notes, not the CAD
      • What we kept from the market work: no product we found does frost, trough, deterrent and trap counting on one mast, so the plan shows all four jobs from one spot and names the limit that the trough must sit within about 15 m of the corner
      • Next: drawn plans for more catalogue products that still show the fallback card

    2. A mixed farm with an orchard next to its stock paddock pays for a frost alarm, a trough monitor, a crop-raid flasher and a pest-trap camera, each with its own pole, power and app. Commercial versions cost about $389–1,252 for a frost alarm (Onset, fruitweb), A$749–1,290 for a trough monitor (Farmbot) and about $2,700 for a trap camera (iScout, Perennia).
      • New product FarmMast: one ESP32-P4 on a solar mast does the jobs of FrostMast, TroughTally, RaidPost and TrapTop
      • New CAD parts: mast case (camera, IR, PIR windows and a tilted bud-IR boss), lid with beacon base and sky window, pole saddle, frost shield, trap arm with camera snout, 6 W panel mount, and a chipless trough pod with lid; every bought part fits and each part is one solid
      • 3D view: a field corner with the mast beside the end apple tree, the delta trap under the arm, the paddock fence and the trough with the pod on its rim
      • Dropped: two XIAO brains and their radios, all AA cells, TroughTally's chip at the trough, TrapTop's bucket gate; WinterWatch, ColdSpot and DewSpot stay separate add-ons
      • Product page https://iemilabs.com/products/farmmast/: $499 + $39/year instead of $722 + about $65/year for the four; parts about $376 (est.)

    FarmMast FAQ

    General FAQ
    Which products does FarmMast replace?

It does the job of FrostMast (bud frost and sprinkler start), TroughTally (stock trough level and inflow), RaidPost (light-and-sound crop-raid deterrent with a bell in the house) and TrapTop (counts moths in your own pheromone trap). Those four cost $722 + about $65 a year together; FarmMast is $499 + $39 a year.

What if my trough is not near the orchard?

FarmMast needs the trough within about 15 m of the mast. If it is further away, a TroughTally on the trough is the better buy, and FarmMast does the other three jobs.

Does it start my wind machine or sprinklers?

No. It tells you when the buds are at risk and when to start, and it can ask a FrostMast FanLink to start a fan, but the machine's own auto-start stays armed as the backstop. FarmMast only monitors and alerts.

Will it siren people or harm animals?

No. It uses light and sound only, never touches a fence, never sirens a person and gives an elephant lights and an early alert only.

    Is FarmMast available now?

No. It is a concept in design. Specifications are targets. We are not taking orders, reservations or deposits, and it has no ship date yet.
