What it is

A camera behind your ball machine and a servo strapped over its speed knob.

What it does

  • Measures every ball's length and speed
  • Turns the knob to hold length
  • Moves only for an adult coach card
  • Keeps each junior under their limit

Who it's for

Cricket academies, indoor nets, batting cages and school programmes with dial machines.

How the parts connect

LengthLock, wired up

Every part, what links it to the brain, and how the data reaches your phone. A solid line is a cable; a dashed line is a radio link.

What you see in the app

One screen for each job LengthLock does.

  • Hold lengthIn academy nets the coach sets 6 m on off stump. As the new balls start landing short, the DialDrive beeps and nudges the knob between balls.

  • Junior netsThe coach taps an adult card to open the session. Each junior taps in, and the machine never goes above that batter's speed limit.

  • Wheel checkAfter a dozen leather balls the wheels glaze and grip less. When the dial keeps drifting, the coach is told to clean them.

App screens with sample data. The interface is in development.

    Lab updates for LengthLock

    All lab updates
    1. LatestCricket clubs need one product for the ground, not several kits and apps.
      • Folded into CricketOne: see https://iemilabs.com/products/cricketone/

See it in 3DFull research and design

    2. A batting-cage owner wants each machine lane to measure every swing, run without staff and give each hitter a pitch speed that suits their age. Posted rules keep under-16s out of the 70–75 mph cages (Fairfax County Park Authority), a used token and card control package for a facility was listed at $35,000 (JJ Amusements), and a programmable touchscreen machine costs $4,598.99 each (Anytime Baseball Supply). Our own two products for it cost $3,188 and $79 a month a lane.
      • Combined into CageLane (https://iemilabs.com/products/cagelane/); LengthLock itself is unchanged and stays the cricket-nets product

See it in 3DFull research and design

    3. A club with a league side and junior nets wants run-out and front-foot evidence for a lone umpire, an over-rate clock, junior spell limits and a smarter bowling machine. Today that is five separate kits, or a nets system from about GBP 2,200 (PitchVision) and sponsor-funded LED wickets (Wisden on Zing).
      • Combined into Cricket MatchKit (https://iemilabs.com/products/matchkit/); LengthLock itself is unchanged

See it in 3DFull research and design

    4. Clubs running junior nets now have to show that bowling machines are run only by experienced adults and never by under-18s (ECB Recreational Cricket Safety Regulations, December 2025 update). BOLA's own guidance adds short legs for under-12s and a playable speed for each player. A dial machine enforces and records none of this.
      • New CAD parts: NetKey case with a strap tunnel and charge port, and NetKey lid with a TAP HERE card dish, screen window and two buttons. All 19 bought parts fit-checked; each printed part is one solid
      • Junior Nets Mode: the speed dial only moves after an adult coach taps a coach card; each junior's card sets their speed limit, checked against the measured speed of every ball; a short-legs prompt for under-12s; the knob is turned down at the end of a session
      • Weekly session record for the club's welfare officer: who ran the machine, who batted, and their speeds. No video
      • Parts list +$51 per NetKey pod with 20 cards (est.); new $529 Junior Nets Kit (target)
      • Design notes: a dated Junior Nets section with 6 sources and a rules note; product page updated with summary, highlights, a junior nets use case, a new tier and 2 FAQs

See it in 3DFull research and design

    5. Manuals say ball consistency drives accuracy and residue builds on the wheels after about a dozen leather balls → the loop closes on measured length, so it corrects drift whatever the cause, and flags the wheels when the correction keeps growing
      • New design: 5 printed parts in code CAD, bought parts fit-checked
      • Market research, hardware list and use case written up
      • Design page and kit render published
      • Product page added

    LengthLock FAQ

    General FAQ
    Is LengthLock available?

No. LengthLock is a concept in the in-house design and testing stage. It is designed and fit-checked in CAD, but nothing has been built or measured, and all numbers are targets or estimates.

How does Junior Nets Mode help with the ECB's 2025 bowling machine rules?

Since December 2025 the ECB's Recreational Cricket Safety Regulations say bowling machines should only be run by suitably experienced adults, never by under-18s. With Junior Nets Mode the DialDrive only moves after an adult coach taps a coach card, each junior's card carries their own speed limit, and the club gets a record of who ran each session. It supports your club's policy; it does not certify that you comply.

Can it check that a junior is wearing a helmet?

No. The camera is 19 m away and cannot reliably see a helmet grille, so the NetKey asks the coach to confirm helmet, neck guard and a clear net before each batter, and records that the coach confirmed. Under-18s must still wear a helmet to the ECB's rules.

    Will it fit my machine?

The DialDrive fits machines with a rotary speed knob, and each knob model needs its own measured coupler. Machines with membrane keys or tablets, such as the BOLA Professional, can use the SightCam for measurement and advice only.

Does it make the machine safer?

No. The machine still throws a hard ball at a person, and we make no safety claims. LengthLock has a coach speed ceiling, announced moves, capped steps and a servo that goes limp on any fault, and the feeder can always turn the knob by hand.

Does it change or void my machine?

Nothing is drilled or wired into the machine. The DialDrive is held on with straps and pads, and taking it off returns the machine to stock. Check with your machine's maker and your insurer before use.

Does it record video of players?

Only numbers are stored by default. Saving a short clip per ball is opt-in, and it stays off in junior sessions unless the club enables it under its safeguarding policy.
