SmartHoop Gym

Make/miss tracking on existing gym hoops, now with a $599 35-second shot clock kit

Counts makes and misses, maps where each shot came from, detects rim contact and clips every make on up to four existing hoops, for any player who checks in with a QR code.

Who buys it
Rec centres, YMCAs, private training facilities and basketball academies.
Why it pays
For four hoops, about $3,700 less up front and $1,000 a year less than Noah's $1,500 per basket + $1,200/yr service (est.); the Shot Pass shares 40% with the facility.
Target price
$1,490 for 2 hoops + $390 per extra hoop + $29/hoop/month; ShotClock kit $599 per court (2 faces + ShotKey); Shot Pass $4.99/month (target)
First-minute wow
A player scans the QR code on the padding, shoots for 20 minutes and leaves with 47/112, a shot chart and a reel of their makes, while three other hoops do the same.

What the research found

And how this design answers it

  • HomeCourt does it on a phone → SmartHoop is fixed infrastructure: four hoops, all day, no tripod, leaderboards and a trainer dashboard across hoops
  • Officiating-grade accuracy needs multi-camera rigs → a narrow, well-posed job: top-down make/miss at the rim plus a baseline camera and a rim accelerometer, fused on one hub
  • Pro systems cost $1,500+ per basket → retrofit kit at $390 per extra hoop on a shared Edge Hub
  • Concept replaced the backboard and strain-gauged the rim → clamp, arm and band-clamped pod; nothing drilled into the hoop
  • Identity and minors → QR check-in lane mode, no face recognition, clips only to checked-in members
  • Shot clock (SR9, 26 Oct 2026): 32 states use the NFHS 35 s shot clock but small schools cite $4,000–20,000 a gym and one more volunteer (Montana Sports); a Daktronics package is $2,900 + freight → rev A2 ShotClock: 2 x 6.5" ShotFaces with a distinct horn and a ShotKey with START/STOP, RESET 35/20 and a RIM lamp from the RimPod, $599 a court (target); the operator decides every reset

Use case

Drop-in shooting at a rec centre

MemberFront deskFacility manager

  1. 01Trigger: the member scans the QR code on hoop 3's padding
  2. 02Detection: the baseline camera logs each attempt and its court position; the RimCam decides make or miss; the RimPod flags rim contact
  3. 03Alert: each shot appears on the member's phone within 2 s
  4. 04Action: when the session ends, the member gets a session card and a reel of makes; the facility sees usage and Shot Pass revenue

Outcome: Shooting stats with no phone set-up, and a membership perk that shares 40% of Shot Pass revenue with the facility

How it works

Architecture

  1. 01

Sense: per hoop, a top-down RimCam, a wall-mounted baseline PoE camera and a BLE RimPod accelerometer

  2. 02

Decide: the Edge Hub (Pi 5 + Hailo-8) runs motion-gated detection on 8 streams and a rim state machine per hoop

  3. 03

Send: local MQTT to phones and the trainer tablet; events and opted-in clips to the cloud

  4. 04

Tell: player phone card, trainer 4-hoop grid, facility utilisation report

Open risks we are working on

  • Hoop-maker warranties and facility insurance may forbid clamped accessories on glass backboards
  • Multi-player attribution outside QR lane mode stays anonymous
  • Rec centres must actually sell the Shot Pass (validate with 2 pilot facilities)
  • PoE + Ethernet into a Pi Zero 2 W needs an adapter combo that may be flaky
  • Shot clock: each state association or league decides which shot clock equipment is acceptable; the operator must still follow the official, not the RIM lamp
