CourtCam

One ceiling camera per gym court: pickleball replays, basketball make/miss, cornhole scoring and coaching clips

Does the jobs of CourtCall, SmartHoop, CornholeCam and CoachVision with one brain: a ceiling head over each court plays the last 30 s on the court TV at the press of a wall button, counts makes and shot spots, scores cornhole rounds and cuts every coaching rep for the player who tapped in.

Who buys it
Facility or recreation manager of a rec centre, YMCA, sportsplex or school gym with 1 to 6 courts booked by the hour.
Why it pays
$1,790 per court + $69/month instead of $8,575 + $257/month for our CourtCall, SmartHoop (2 hoops), CornholeCam (hub + 2 lanes) and CoachVision bought separately; one Pi 5 + Hailo-8 replaces four hubs (est.).
Target price
$1,790 per court (head, CourtKey, 2 RimPods, 20 wristbands) + $69/court/month (target)
First-minute wow
The same court shows a pickleball replay at 6 pm, a shot chart at 7 pm and a live cornhole score at 8 pm, with nothing moved and nobody filming.

What the research found

And how this design answers it

  • Four hubs (CourtCall, SmartHoop, CornholeCam, CoachVision each had a Pi 5 + Hailo-8) → one Pi 5 + AI HAT+ in each ceiling head
  • Eight-plus cameras on fences, arms, lane heads and bay posts → two Camera Module 3 Wide in one head: one down at the court, one at the hoop
  • CourtCall's replay button and CoachVision's bay tap reader → one CourtKey on the wall with REPLAY and TAP
  • SmartHoop's RimCam arm over the rim → dropped; the RimPod is kept for rim contact
  • Mode follows the booking (pickleball, basketball, cornhole, coaching), so one court earns from every block in the gym schedule

Use case

Tuesday at a rec centre gym

Front deskPlayersCoachLeague host

  1. 01Trigger: the booking system sets court 2 to pickleball at 6 pm, basketball at 7 pm and cornhole league at 8 pm
  2. 02Detection: the head films from above; a player presses REPLAY and the rally plays on the court TV
  3. 03Count: at 7 pm a member taps a wristband and shoots; the head counts makes, the RimPod catches rim hits
  4. 04Action: at 8 pm the same camera scores each cornhole round on the TV; coaching reps reach the coach's tablet

Outcome: One device per court sells replay, shooting, league scoring and coaching clips; $6,785 less hardware than four products (est.)

How it works

Architecture

  1. 01

Sense: two Camera Module 3 Wide (court and hoop), RimPod accelerometer, CourtKey button and tap reader

  2. 02

Decide: Pi 5 + Hailo-8 runs the detector for the booked mode, ACL scoring, make/miss and rep cutting

  3. 03

Send: Ethernet over PoE+ to the venue network; BLE from the RimPods; Wi-Fi from the CourtKey

  4. 04

Tell: court TV page, CourtCam app for desk, coaches and players, clip links by QR

Open risks we are working on

  • One head straight down at 7.6 m covers about 19 x 10 m (est.): one pickleball court or two cornhole lanes; a full basketball court needs two heads
  • Make/miss from 9-12 m at 30 fps is untested; the RimPod backs it up
  • Fitting at height needs the venue's contractor, a lift and a safety cable
  • Video of juniors: no face recognition, clips leave only on request, recording only while booked
  • No line calls or official decisions; scores are shown with a replay to check

Design stage only: nothing on this page is for sale. Specifications and prices are targets.
