The whole TroughTally
A rim head counts water through a pulse meter and measures trough level and temperature. LoRaWAN carries it to the ranch gateway for alerts.
02Brain
RAK3272S (RAK3172)
The brain: it runs the troughtally firmware program

03
Pulse water meter
Counts every gallon that flows into the trough
RAK3272S (RAK3172) · 2-core cable, wake pin · Pulse per gallon
04
Ultrasonic level sensor
Measures water level from above, nothing in the water
RAK3272S (RAK3172) · UART · Distance to water

05
Water temperature probe
Tells frozen, normal or hot water
RAK3272S (RAK3172) · 1-Wire (one data pin) · Water temperature

06
WinterWatch front end
Reads heater current and stray voltage on the water
RAK3272S (RAK3172) · Analog pins (ADC) · Heater amps, volts on water
07
5 V step-up regulator
Powers the ultrasonic sensor only while it measures
RAK3272S (RAK3172) · GPIO enable pin · 5 V on demand

08
Two AA lithium cells
Run the head for about three years, down to −40 °C

7 key parts, one program, and your phone
What it is
A water meter and battery rim sensor that fit any stock trough's float valve.
What it does
Who it's for
Cow-calf ranchers with 3 to 30 troughs who drive out to check water.
How the parts connect
Every part, what links it to the brain, and how the data reaches your phone. A solid line is a cable; a dashed line is a radio link.
The program
void loop() {
digitalWrite(BOOST_EN, HIGH); delay(150);
uint16_t mm = medianOf5(readA02yyuw(Serial1)); // UART level
digitalWrite(BOOST_EN, LOW);
float tempC = ds18b20.getTempCByIndex(0); // 1-Wire
State s = troughState(pulses, mm, tempC);
uint8_t up[12];
packUplink(up, pulses, mm, tempC, battery_mv(), s);
bool alert = (s != DRINKING && s != OK);
api.lorawan.send(sizeof up, up, 2, alert); // port 2, confirmed on alert
api.system.sleep.all(alert ? 60000 : 900000); // pulses keep counting asleep

One screen for each job TroughTally does.
Supply cutThe herd drinks after a hand valve upstream was left shut. The level falls with no water coming in, so the rancher knows before the trough runs dry.
Float stuck openAt dawn a float valve sticks open and water pours over the rim. The meter keeps running while the trough is full, which only a stuck float does.
Herd intakeIn a heatwave the rancher wants to know each trough keeps up. Every morning the app shows how much the herd drank, trough by trough.
Heater checkOn a January night the trough heater's plug works loose. The water cools toward freezing, and the rancher hears before the trough ices over.
Water voltageCows stand back from the heated trough and won't drink. TroughTally measures the voltage between the water and the ground where they stand.
App screens with sample data. The interface is in development.

Hardware: $199 per trough
Software: $36 per trough per year
Target pricing. A $249 gateway is needed per ranch unless LoRaWAN coverage already exists. Estimated BOM about $188 per trough at qty 1 and about $95 at qty 100, plus about $179 for the gateway. The WinterWatch kit is a target +$99 per trough (BOM about $74.50 at qty 1, est.).
Indicative launch pricing in USD, excluding taxes and shipping. Final pricing is confirmed before any balance is charged.

From the product lab · ideation phase
No. TroughTally is a concept in the in-house design and testing stage. The CAD design is complete, but it has not been built or tested on a ranch yet, and all specifications are targets.
No. TroughTally is monitor and alert only. Your float valve still fills the trough.
No. A trough meter sees the herd total only, and our model suggests it can see herd-wide drops of about 11.5% or more. It is meant for herd-wide problems like an open gate, water quality or heat, and alerts are worded as 'check the herd'.
No. It measures the AC voltage between the water and the ground where the cattle stand and tells you when it is above 0.5 V, the level UNL Extension says can make some cattle drink less. It is not an electrical inspection; any amber or red reading means call an electrician.
No. The heater plugs into a bought, listed line splitter and the sensor clips onto it. No mains wiring goes into the TroughTally head. Hard-wired and 240 V waterers need a different fitting that is not designed yet.
TroughTally uses LoRaWAN to save power and cost, so it needs a gateway at the house or existing coverage, and line of sight over a few kilometres. Satellite monitors need no gateway, which is a real advantage for them.
