What it is

A solar sideline station with one brain that does the heat, lightning, check-in, sprint timing and referee flag jobs for one practice field.

What it does

  • Works out the heat band and alerts coaches
  • Runs the 30-minute lightning clock
  • Checks athletes in and times sprints
  • Buzzes the referee for each flag

Who it's for

High-school athletic directors and athletic trainers, and clubs that share one field.

What you see in the app

One screen for each job FieldSide does.

  • Heat bandMid-practice on field 2 the heat number climbs. The station moves the band from Yellow to Orange and texts the coaches.

  • LightningA storm builds to the west. The station hears a strike 9 km away, starts the 30-minute clock and buzzes coaches and the referee band.

  • Sprint timesCoaches set four poles in a lane. Each athlete runs 30 m, and the split lights up on the sideline digits and in the app.

  • Referee flagsOn match day the assistant referees raise their flags. The referee wrist band buzzes, and the station logs each flag with the match time.

App screens with sample data. The interface is in development.

    Lab updates for FieldSide

    All lab updates
    1. LatestOne school athletics product, as the smart finish posts themselves.
      • Still part of AthleticsOne, now redesigned as smart finish posts: https://iemilabs.com/products/athleticsone/

See it in 3DFull research and design

    2. Schools want one product for heat, lightning and race timing, not one per job.
      • FieldSide page now links to AthleticsOne: https://iemilabs.com/products/athleticsone/

See it in 3DFull research and design

    3. A high-school practice field shared by football, soccer and track needs a WBGT heat reading and log (UIL rule from 1 Aug 2026, GHSA on-site rule), a 30-minute lightning clock (NFHS guidelines), heat-acclimatization check-in and weekly sprint testing, and hosts league matches where referees use electronic flags. Today that is a Kestrel ($554-786) or a Perry Weather subscription, stopwatches or $940-1,100 gate pairs, and $900 ErvoCom flags.
      • New product FieldSide: one LilyGO T-SIM7080G-S3 (ESP32-S3 + LTE-M) in a fence-post station does the jobs of FieldFlag (with HeatFlag's heat sensors), OffsideFlag and SplitPole
      • New CAD parts: station case with U-bolt ears and door with a TAP spot (brain, battery, lightning chip, tap reader and globe board inside), sensor arm, radiation shield, 200 mm digit module, referee flag grip, referee band case and lid, sprint pole head and lid; every bought part fits and each part is one solid
      • 3D view: a practice-field fence with the station, shield, black globe, wind sensor and solar panel on one post, the digits on the next, a referee flag, a referee band and a sprint pole on the lane
      • Shared and dropped: FieldFlag's nRF9151 board, Pico 2 display controller, StrikeClock pod and RollCall pod, SplitPole's lead-pole page and HeatFlag's beacon are gone; the lightning chip and tap reader moved inside the station; the digits now also show the lightning countdown and sprint splits
      • Product page https://iemilabs.com/products/fieldside/: $1,690 + $299/yr per field instead of $2,394 + $299/yr; parts about $1,290 a field kit (est.)

    FieldSide FAQ

    General FAQ
    Which products does FieldSide replace?

It does the job of FieldFlag (heat band, coach alerts, lightning clock, tap-in and sideline digits, with HeatFlag's heat sensors), OffsideFlag (flags that buzz the referee) and SplitPole (sprint timing poles). Bought separately for one field those are $2,394 + $299 a year; FieldSide is $1,690 + $299 a year.

Does FieldSide decide whether practice is safe?

No. It measures heat and hears lightning, shows the band and the clock and alerts people. The athletic trainer or coach decides. It is not UIL, GHSA or NFHS approved.

Does it detect every lightning strike?

No. The detector chip estimates the distance to strikes it hears, up to about 40 km. It is an extra warning, not a replacement for a weather service, the forecast or your own eyes and ears.

    Who uses the flags?

The referee crew on match days. Referees often bring their own flags, and leagues must allow electronic flags. The station listens to the flags, logs them and can buzz the referee STOP for lightning.

    Is FieldSide available now?

No. It is a concept in design. Specifications are targets. We are not taking orders, reservations or deposits, and it has no ship date yet.
