01
The whole CalvingPen
The barn Edge Hub watches every calving pen through its PenEye camera and reads the pen's water trough through the same PenEye cable, then rings one bell and fills one app.
02Brain
IEMI Edge Hub (Raspberry Pi 5 + AI HAT+) in the barn office
The brain, in a separate hub box (not shown): it runs the calvingpen hub service program

03
Pen camera and IR light
Sees the water bag or feet, the calf out, and the cow at the trough, day and night
IEMI Edge Hub (Raspberry Pi 5 + AI HAT+) in the barn office · PoE Ethernet via the PenEye · 1080p video, 2 frames a second used

04
PenEye computer
Streams the camera and relays the trough head's readings
IEMI Edge Hub (Raspberry Pi 5 + AI HAT+) in the barn office · PoE Ethernet · Video stream and trough readings each second
05
Trough level sensor
Reads the water level from the rim: drinking, supply cut, ice
IEMI Edge Hub (Raspberry Pi 5 + AI HAT+) in the barn office · RS-485 lead via the PenEye · Level in mm every 15 s

06
Trough head: meter, temperature, heater
Counts water-meter pulses, reads water temperature, heater current and stray voltage
IEMI Edge Hub (Raspberry Pi 5 + AI HAT+) in the barn office · RS-485 lead via the PenEye · Gallons, °C, heater on/off, volts on the water
07
BarnBell
Rings by the bed: stage 2 too long, calf not moving, no water for a fresh cow
IEMI Edge Hub (Raspberry Pi 5 + AI HAT+) in the barn office · Wi-Fi · MQTT on the farm LAN · Pen, minutes, alarm tone
08
PoE power for the pen
One Ethernet cable powers the PenEye, its IR light and the trough head
IEMI Edge Hub (Raspberry Pi 5 + AI HAT+) in the barn office · PoE Ethernet; 5 V up the lead · 6.9 W at night with IR (est.)

All connected
7 key parts, one program, and your phone
What it is
A camera and a water-bowl head for each calving pen, run by one barn hub.
What it does
Who it's for
Beef and dairy farms with calving pens.
How the parts connect
Every part, what links it to the brain, and how the data reaches your phone. A solid line is a cable; a dashed line is a radio link.
The program
while True:
for pen in pens:
cow = hailo.detect(pen.camera.frame()) # cow box + pose
pen.state.update(cow, now()) # QUIET..STAGE2..CALF_OUT
t = pen.trough.read() # RS-485 via the PenEye
pen.water.update(t.pulses, t.level_mm, t.temp_c)
pen.winter.update(t.heater_a, t.stray_v)
a = rules(pen.state, pen.water, pen.winter, cow.at_trough)
if a.bell: bells.ring(pen.name, a.text) # MQTT on the farm LAN
if a: app.push(a, clip=pen.clip())

Farmer's and herd worker's phones; BarnBell by the bed
One screen for each job CalvingPen does.
Calving clockIn pen 3 a heifer's feet showed at 01:20. The camera times stage 2 and rings the bell by the bed past the 60-minute limit.
Calf upThe calf is out at 02:14. The camera watches until it lifts its head and stands, and rings if it has not moved.
Fresh cow waterAfter calving, the meter on pen 3's bowl shows when the cow first drinks, so you know she is taking water.
Trough faultsIn pen 1 the bowl stops refilling. The head tells a cut supply from a stuck float, so you fix it on the same walk.
Winter waterOn a frosty night the heater in pen 2's bowl fails. The head sees the water cooling and checks for voltage on the water.
App screens with sample data. The interface is in development.
| Stage 2 clock | Pen 3: feet showing 35 min, heifer limit 60 | Every minute in stage 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Calf out | Pen 3: calf out 02:14, up at 02:41 | On change |
| Fresh cow drinking | Pen 3: first drink 9 gal at 02:58 | Each drink |
| Trough faults | Pen 1: supply cut, no inflow 6 min | At once |
| Winter checks | Pen 2: heater off, water 1.5 °C | Every 15 min |
| Stray voltage | Pen 4: 0.6 V on the water, call an electrician | Every 15 min |
Cameras face the pens only; video stays on the hub, and only short alert clips reach the phone.

From the product lab · ideation phase
It does the job of CalveClock (the labour clock, calf out and calf not moving, with a bell by the bed) and TroughTally with WinterWatch (supply cut, stuck float, leak, ice, heater and stray voltage on the water) in each calving pen, with one hub, one cable per pen and one app. Separately a 4-pen barn costs $2,455 + $243 a year; CalvingPen is $2,190 + $149 a year (target).
No. It monitors and alerts only. You or your vet decide when to help. It never opens or shuts the water.
In a pen with one cow, yes: the meter counts what goes into the bowl after the calf is out. In a group pen it sees the pen total, and the camera only shows whether a cow went to the bowl.
No. It shows a voltage on the water. Any amber or red reading means have an electrician check the heater and wiring.
No. Each bowl head is powered and read through a 10 m lead from the pen camera, which runs on one network cable.
No. It is a concept in design. The CAD and fit checks are done, but it has not been built or tested. We are not taking orders, reservations or deposits.
