StudyOne
IEMI's one product for a child's study desk: the desk lamp, made smart
The child's desk lamp, at the same size and place, checks sums and spelling on the page with hints, follows the child reading aloud, calls breaks, eye distance and dim light on its own light and voice, and sends the parent one evening summary. No video or voice leaves the lamp.
- Who buys it
- Parents of children aged about 6 to 12 who do homework at home; then tutoring centres and after-school clubs.
- Why it pays
- $279 + $4/month instead of about $344 + $25/month for an eye-care study lamp, a posture trainer, a focus timer, a homework app ($9.99/month) and a reading app ($14.99/month) bought separately (est.).
- Target price
- $279 per smart desk lamp + $4/month parent summary (target; stage 2 raised from $229)
- First-minute wow
- Question 6 says 48 - 19 = 31. The lamp's light turns amber and it says 'look again at number 6'. She writes 29 and gets a green tick, with no parent at the desk.

What the research found
And how this design answers it
- Rev A (28 Oct 2026): the study desk flagship is the desk lamp itself. Head: Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W brain, Camera Module 3 Wide over the page, I2S mic, VL53L1X eye-distance sensor tilted at the child, VEML7700 page light sensor, two reading lights and a call light, ATECC608, tamper switch. Base: speaker, amp and ballast
- Makes the desk's calls itself: sums and spelling right or 'look again', break due, head too close, light too dim, sat down and left, bedtime; reading-aloud help and a tablet on the desk assist; unsure means unsure
- Child rules first: IEC 60598-2-10 children's luminaire, 5 V only, tilt-checked base, COPPA and GDPR-K parental consent, no video or voice leaves the lamp
- Gaps listed: screen time away from the desk (the phone's own controls stay), back posture, long explanations (cloud only with parent opt-in), very messy handwriting (unsure)
Use case
A 9-year-old doing homework while her parent is at work
Child at the deskParent at workClass teacher
- 01Trigger: she sits down at 16:30 and opens her maths book
- 02Detect: the page camera reads each answer, the eye-distance sensor sees her lean in, the mic follows her reading
- 03Act: green tick or 'look again', a break at 22 minutes, 'sit up a little', help with a skipped word
- 04Log: one signed evening summary to the parent: focus time, right first time, words to practise
Outcome: Homework is done with breaks and good light, the parent sees what needs practice, and nothing but counts and words leaves the desk
How it works
Architecture
- 01
Sense: a page camera, a mic, an eye-distance sensor and a light sensor inside the lamp head
- 02
Decide: the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W runs the page, reading, focus and eye models and says unsure below the line
- 03
Show: the reading light, a call light and a voice from the lamp itself
- 04
Tell: one signed evening summary over Wi-Fi to the parent app

Open risks we are working on
- Handwriting OCR on a Pi Zero 2 W is slow on a full page; it reads only the answer just written
- Reading-aloud help depends on a clean page read; unsure words are never corrected
- Children's luminaire, photobiological and radio tests are still to be done
- Parents may expect full tutoring; rev A gives hints on sums and spelling only
- Not an eye test or attention test: it reminds and reports only
Design stage only: nothing on this page is for sale. Specifications and prices are targets.
