SpillGuard AI (FloorLog)

A floor-care timeline a store can show its insurer: walks, warning signs and spills, timestamped

Logs every floor walk with tamper-resistant NFC taps, records when wet-floor signs go out and come back, and, with optional hotspot cameras, gives early warning of possible spills.

Who buys it
Owner or operator of 1–5 independent grocery, convenience or restaurant sites, often prompted by their liability insurance broker.
Why it pays
Retail slip-and-fall claims are commonly quoted at $15–50k each (est.). Under Texas's time-notice rule, records of when the floor was checked bear directly on whether a store should have found a hazard. One claim defended or reduced pays for many years of FloorLog.
Target price
$149 kit + $19/store/month (target); hotspot vision +$15/month per 4 cameras on an Edge Hub
First-minute wow
Type in the date and time from a claim letter and get one page: entrance checked 11 minutes before, wet-floor sign #2 out for the previous 97 minutes, no spill visible on camera.

What the research found

And how this design answers it

  • Enterprise CV against incumbents (Ocucon, Badger robots) → an evidence log for small stores that works with no cameras at all
  • Fall detection is a life-safety claim → removed; no person-down alerts, no 'prevents injuries' promise
  • Spill vision is unreliable on glossy floors → only 'possible spill' at 2–4 known hotspots, measured before it is sold
  • Paper sweep logs are free but easy to back-fill → NTAG 424 DNA taps make a one-time code that can't be replayed
  • Staff won't do extra work → one 2-second phone tap per checkpoint; sign logging is automatic
  • Records can cut both ways → append-only log, store-set retention, and the store is told plainly to ask its lawyer first

Use case

Rainy afternoon at the entrance

Front-end managerCashierInsurance adjuster

  1. 01Trigger: rain starts and the entrance walk interval drops to 20 minutes
  2. 02Detection: the SignTag logs wet-floor sign #2 opened at the doors; the cashier taps the entrance checkpoint
  3. 03Alert: the on-shift phone gets a reminder when an entrance walk is due
  4. 04Action: months later the manager exports the timeline showing the sign out and the last check 11 minutes before a fall

Outcome: Evidence that the store warned customers and checked the area; one claim defended or reduced is worth $15–50k (est.)

How it works

Architecture

  1. 01

Sense: NFC checkpoints tapped by staff phones, accelerometer SignTags on wet-floor signs, optional hotspot cameras

  2. 02

Decide: the cloud verifies each tap's one-time code; SignTag firmware decides deployed or stowed from tilt; the hub flags persistent floor changes

  3. 03

Send: HTTPS for taps, MQTT over TLS for SignTags and hub events; snapshots only, faces blurred

  4. 04

Tell: shift view and reminders on phones, timeline PDF export, monthly broker report

Open risks we are working on

  • Staff must actually tap; a 4-week pilot measures it
  • Records cut both ways: a logged missed walk is evidence too, so stores need legal advice first
  • No insurer has yet said it will give a premium credit
  • Hotspot spill vision may miss its accuracy target; the Lite kit must stand on its own

Design stage only: nothing on this page is for sale. Specifications and prices are targets.
