SmartStump Pro
Wooden cricket stumps that time the wicket, built to Law 8
Three turned-ash stumps and two ash bails that record when a bail is disturbed and when it clears its groove, when the ball hits a stump and the sound at the stumps, all on one shared clock. They mark that moment on the club's own video for the umpire.
- Who buys it
- Cricket clubs and leagues that already stream matches (UK, US), league organisers who want run-out evidence, and academies or indoor centres running nets.
- Why it pays
- A Club Set is $899, against $4,000–40,000 to rent pro LED wickets. It plays as a normal wooden wicket and adds dismissal evidence and clips for about the cost of one year of streaming software (est.).
- Target price
- $899 Club Set, $1,599 Match Kit (both ends), $699 Junior Set, $79 LED bail pair + $19/month League Stream (target)
- First-minute wow
- The keeper whips the bails off a wicket that looks like any wooden set. The umpire's band buzzes, and a few seconds later the stream replays the run-out frozen on the frame where the bail cleared its groove. The umpire still makes the call.

What the research found
And how this design answers it
- Law 8.1 says "three wooden stumps with two wooden bails" → rev D stumps are turned ash with a bored core, and match bails are ash with two magnets; the aluminium tube is gone
- Law 29.2.2: disturbing a bail is not removing it → a 1.27 mm lift is only logged; "clear" means the spigot rose a full groove depth
- WPL 2025 Zing bails lit at the slightest disturbance → nothing on the stump lights, and LED bails (only where allowed) light on clear only
- Bails must dislodge like wood → the match bail is 9.59 g against 9.26 g for plain ash, with the centre of gravity within 0.02 mm; no ferromagnetic part within 8 mm of a magnet
- Electronics fail mid-match → nothing mechanical depends on them, so the set plays as a normal wooden wicket
- Children on camera need consent → junior mode blocks streaming, clips and audio until consent is recorded for every child in both teams
- Phone apps can't sense bail lift or stump contact → SmartStump times exactly those and uses the club's camera as the camera
- Umpires already carry a counter → the band is that counter, synced to the scorer; it buzzes on ball 5, ball 6 and a clear event, never a verdict
Use case
Run-out in a streamed league match
Square-leg umpireScorerStream operator
- 01Trigger: the keeper breaks the wicket as the batter dives
- 02Detection: the Hall sensor under the groove logs the disturbance, then "clear" when the spigot has risen a full groove depth, on the set clock
- 03Alert: the umpire's band buzzes; the scorer and stream get the event within about 90 ms. Nothing says OUT
- 04Action: the OBS replay is marked at the clear frame; the umpire answers the appeal and judges the batter's ground from the frame or their own view
Outcome: The umpire judges a close run-out using the frame the bail picked, and the clip is on the stream within about 8 seconds
How it works
Architecture
- 01
Sense: linear Hall sensors under 2.0 mm of wood in each stump head; ±200 g accelerometer and IMU in each stump; PDM mic in the middle stump (off in junior mode)
- 02
Decide: the middle stump is the set clock master (Nordic timeslot sync, ±10 µs target) and labels events "disturbed" or "clear". These are evidence, never a verdict
- 03
Send: BLE to an nRF52840 USB dongle; a Node.js bridge serves WebSocket, an OBS overlay and replay markers, with a consent gate in junior mode
- 04
Tell: umpire counter band (haptic), scorer and stream screens, coach session cards; WideTrack shows wide-line distance only

Bill of materials: about $300 per Club Set in parts at qty 1 (est.).
| Block | Part | Why this part |
|---|---|---|
| Wicket | Turned ash stumps Ø37 (head + bored body) and turned ash bails with 4 × 2 mm N42 magnets | Law 8.1 wooden stumps and bails; same mass and seating as plain wood |
| Head brain | Insight SiP ISP1807 (nRF52840, 8 × 8 mm, antenna built in) on a Ø22 PCB inside the wooden head | Wood is RF-transparent; ADC, PDM and radio sync in one part |
| Groove sensor | TI DRV5055A3 linear Hall under a 2.0 mm wood skin | 56 mT seated; disturbed at 1.27 mm, clear at a full groove depth |
| Stump hit | ADI ADXL372 (±200 g) + ST LSM6DSOX | Catches the ball strike and a stump knocked out |
| Stump mic | Infineon IM69D130 PDM MEMS behind a Ø1.2 pinhole | Hears the edge 20 cm from the bat; off for junior matches |
| Power | Molicel P28A 18650 in a PA12 cartridge in the bore, charged through flush groove pins in the set dock | About 135 h for the middle stump; stump within 10% of a plain ash stump |
| LED bail (option) | ISP1507 + LIS2DW12 + LiPo in a PA12 shell, 9.49 g | Only where playing conditions allow LED wickets; lights on clear, never on a rattle |
| Umpire counter band | ISP1507 + 2 C&K KMR2-class keys + 6 LEDs + LRA | Replaces the umpire's counter and keeps the scorer's count in step |

Open risks we are working on
- Law 8.1: a bored, pinned ash stump is new; MCC and ECB officials must agree it is "wooden" before we say "match legal"
- Dislodgement must match plain ash bails in a pendulum test, and the magnets must not hold a bail down (tests T13, T13b)
- Each national body sets junior stump and bail sizes (Law 8.4); no current ECB table was found
- The 2.0 mm wood skin under the groove and the glued head joint must survive direct hits (test T25)
- Bail barrel and spigot diameters are not in the Laws and must be measured on real bails
- Niche market: 10 paid pre-orders from streaming clubs are needed before a 10-set build
