IEMI's one product for a construction site: the site's own entry turnstile, made smart
The full-height turnstile already standing in the hoarding at the site's pedestrian entrance, at the same 1,400 x 1,400 x 2,400 mm size, baseplate and mains feed, checks hard hat, hi-vis and boots at every entry, keeps the signed list of who is on site and sends the muster list in an evacuation, calls tailgating and after-hours entry, sets the site's heat flag and rest time, and warns of dust, smoke and noise at the boundary.
- Who buys it
- General and principal contractors, groundworks and civils firms, quarries and mine surface entrances with a controlled pedestrian gate, bought or hired with the turnstile through the site's access-control or plant-hire supplier.
- Why it pays
- $8,990 + $99/month per entrance instead of about $9,098 + $198/month for a plain turnstile with a sign-in service, PPE Gate AI and HeatGuard AI bought separately (est.).
- Target price
- $8,990 per entrance (replaces its turnstile) + $99/month gate app with LTE-M (target)
- First-minute wow
- 06:57 on a Monday with nobody on the gate: the turnstile holds one entry until the hard hat goes on, and at 14:02 the fire marshal has the list of the two people still on site before they reach the muster point.

What the research found
And how this design answers it
- Rev A (28 Oct 2026): the construction and mining flagship is the site's own full-height entry turnstile. Canopy: Raspberry Pi 5 brain, Camera Module 3 Wide entry camera (street face, 35 degrees down) and site camera (site face, 20 degrees down), HLK-LD2450 rotor radar in the canopy floor, Sensirion SPS30, SHT45, MAX31865 + PT1000 on the black lid patch, MAX9814, three NeoPixel call lights, piezo, speaker and MAX98357A, ATECC608, Walter LTE-M, IRM-20-5, PowerBoost 1000C and LiPo; D2F-01 tamper switch under the lid; reader head: PN532 tap reader, 2.13 in e-paper and the PPE light
- Makes the gate's calls itself: PPE at entry, who is on site and the muster list, tailgating, after-hours entry and the heat flag alone; dust, smoke and noise at the boundary go to the site manager; unsure means 'check'
- Legal at the gate: IBC 1010.3.1 high turnstile (free turn for the exit, 787 mm passage), 80 in headroom and the ADA 100 mm protrusion limit checked in the CAD; the site's own accessible and emergency gate kept beside it
- Nothing added to the site: no PPE camera mast, no heat station, no dust monitor on the hoarding
Use case
A 60-person building site with one pedestrian gate and no gateman
Site managerSupervisors and crew leadsFire marshalContractor safety lead
- 01Trigger: shift start, a missing hard hat, two people in one turn, a hot afternoon, a dusty slab break-out, a fire alarm
- 02Detect: entry and site cameras, the rotor radar, the tap reader and heat, dust and sound sensors inside the turnstile
- 03Act: the turnstile's own lights, tone and voice prompt; the entry held until PPE is on; the muster list to the fire marshal
- 04Log: one signed gate log per site for the site manager, the client, the inspector and the insurer
Outcome: PPE checked at every entry, a right on-site list in every evacuation, heat rest kept, dust found before a complaint, and a signed record
How it works
Architecture
- 01
Sense: entry and site cameras, a rotor radar, a tap reader, heat, dust and sound sensors inside the turnstile
- 02
Decide: PPE, counting, smoke, heat, dust and noise models on the Raspberry Pi 5; 'check' below the line
- 03
Act: the turnstile's own call lights, tone, voice prompt and entry hold
- 04
Tell: one signed log and calls to the gate app over LTE-M
Hardware
Real parts, buyable today
Bill of materials: $5,739 per entrance at qty 1 with the plain turnstile ($5,228, est.) and $511 of our parts; replaces the site's turnstile.
| Block | Part | Why this part |
|---|---|---|
| Brain | Raspberry Pi 5 (2 GB) | Runs the PPE, counting and smoke models and every call |
| See | 2 x Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 Wide + HLK-LD2450 | PPE as people walk up, smoke and the muster point; people in each turn |
| Site conditions | Sensirion SPS30, Adafruit SHT45, MAX31865 + PT1000, MAX9814 | Dust, heat index with sun load, noise |

Open risks we are working on
- PPE detection in rain, low sun and at night: the gate holds only on a confident miss, otherwise it says 'check' and a supervisor decides
- Dust and noise readings are indicative; sites with a planning condition still need the monitor that condition names
- Heat from one point at the gate may not match a distant work area; the site's own heat plan decides the rest schedule
- Workers' privacy and consent; no face recognition, passes only, blurred frames
- Hire fleets: the turnstile moves between sites; it pairs to each site and works as a plain turnstile until paired
