FloorSafe

One smart wet-floor sign that logs the spill, shows the heat and catches vape and smoke

Does the job of SpillGuard AI, HeatFlag and VapeSense AI in one device: a sensor crown on a standard wet-floor sign logs when the sign is out and away, shows an indoor heat colour from the heat index, and detects vape and smoke events. Its wall dock charges it, holds the folded sign and is a floor-walk NFC checkpoint. Monitor and alert only: it does not prevent falls or certify compliance.

Who buys it
Chief engineer, facilities manager or executive housekeeper at a select-service hotel, a 100–400-unit apartment building or an office building, who already buys wet-floor signs and is asked to deal with slip claims, indoor heat in back-of-house rooms, and smoking or vaping in non-smoking areas.
Why it pays
Bought separately, our three products list at $1,547 up front plus $230 a month (SpillGuard $399 + $199/mo, HeatGuard/HeatFlag $699 + $19/mo, VapeSense $449 + $12/mo). FloorSafe is $349 + $15/month per sign and dock. One smoking incident costs a hotel about $620–1,300 (Minut), and a retail slip-and-fall claim is often quoted at $15–50k (est.).
Target price
$349 per sign crown and dock + $15/month (target); separately the three products are $1,547 + $230/month
First-minute wow
The yellow sign the housekeeper already carries now shows when it went out, glows the heat colour, and texts the manager when someone vapes in the stairwell.

What the research found

And how this design answers it

  • Three single-job devices (sign tag, pole heat station, ceiling vape disc) → one ESP32-C6 crown with one battery, one radio and one enclosure
  • A vape sensor on a sign that moves is useless → the sign lives on a wall dock in the corridor or stairwell, and senses the air full-time there on dock power
  • HeatFlag's WBGT globe, anemometer, solar panel and $198 beacon are for outdoor sites → indoors the heat index from an SHT45 (the Cal/OSHA indoor rule uses temperature or heat index) and a 12-LED ring
  • VapeSense's LoRa radio and ceiling mount → building Wi-Fi from the dock; the ceiling disc stays the choice for guest rooms
  • SpillGuard's wall plaques → the dock itself is the walk checkpoint, so there is one less thing on the wall
  • Battery too small for a fan sensor → the SEN66 runs 1 minute in 5 while the sign is out (about 12 days, est.) and full-time on the dock

Use case

Hotel back corridor on a hot afternoon

HousekeeperChief engineerFront-desk manager

  1. 01Trigger: a housekeeper lifts the sign off its dock by the laundry and opens it on a mopped floor; the crown logs 'Sign 3 out' and flashes amber
  2. 02Detection: the laundry corridor reads a heat index of 88 °F and the ring turns red; the engineer gets a heat alert
  3. 03Alert: back on the dock in the guest stairwell, the crown sees a vape-shaped particle burst and messages the manager 'Vape, 86% sure, stairwell B'
  4. 04Action: months later the manager exports the timeline: sign out 41 minutes, last walk tap 9 minutes before a slip claim

Outcome: One device replaces three, at $349 + $15/month instead of $1,547 + $230/month; heat and air events are logged with the readings that caused them

How it works

Architecture

  1. 01

Sense: SEN66 air module, SHT45 heat probe in a vented fin, LIS3DH tilt, NFC checkpoint on the dock

  2. 02

Decide: on the ESP32-C6: sign state from tilt and dock power, heat band from the heat index, vape/smoke classifier from the air curve

  3. 03

Send: building Wi-Fi, MQTT over TLS; walk taps go from the phone over HTTPS

  4. 04

Tell: colour ring on the sign, push alerts, one web app with the sign timeline, heat log and air events

Open risks we are working on

  • Vape classification accuracy is unproven (same open test as VapeSense); it only flags 'consistent with vaping' at a place, never a person
  • SHT45 heat index near a warm crown: the fin must read within 0.5 °C of a reference; not yet measured
  • Staff may leave signs out of their dock; then the air job only runs 1 minute in 5
  • Indoor heat rules differ by state; the colour bands are settings, advisory only
  • Battery life off the dock (about 12 days) is an estimate until measured
