VisionDesign rev A, 28 Oct 2026: smart tipping bay traffic light that runs the bay (8 calls, 6 alone, 2 assist), call lights behind the three aspects, tone, horn, ATECC608 and tamper switch inside; 15 camera, heat and radar views checked in the CAD; not built

BayOne

IEMI's one product for a waste or recycling site: the tipping bay's own traffic light, made smart

The red, amber and green signal head already standing on the end of the bay's push wall, at the same 300 x 260 x 860 mm size, base plate and feed, shows green only when the bay is clear, turns red with a horn for a person behind the reversing truck, photographs every load against its fleet number, holds the bay for a battery or gas bottle, grades each load for the hauler, and calls a pile hot spot that keeps growing and a pile over the 4 m line.

Who buys it
Site or operations managers at waste transfer stations, material recovery facilities, recycling centres and scrap yards with tipping bays; councils and waste firms with many sites.
Why it pays
$3,990 + $49/month per bay instead of about $6,630 + $158/month for a plain bay light, RecycleYard and EmberWatch AI bought separately (est.).
Target price
$3,990 per bay (replaces its traffic light) + $49/month bay app with LTE-M (target)
First-minute wow
02:40 with the hall empty: the light on bay 2 flashes red because one cell of the pile has warmed 9 °C in 40 minutes, and the on-call person has the heat clip before any smoke.

What the research found

And how this design answers it

  • Rev A (28 Oct 2026): the waste and recycling flagship is the tipping bay's own 3-aspect 200 mm traffic light on the push wall end. Head floor: Raspberry Pi 5 brain, Walter LTE-M, ATECC608, MAX98357A amp, piezo and speaker horn; bay-side wall: Camera Module 3 Wide bay camera 22 degrees down over the wall top, Adafruit 4469 MLX90640 heat camera, HLK-LD2450 radar 40 degrees down; behind the door: Camera Module 3 Wide approach camera between the green and amber aspects, two NeoPixel Sticks behind each aspect; back wall: Mean Well IRM-20-5, PowerBoost 1000C and LiPo, Omron G5V-1 fire-panel relay; Omron D2F-01 tamper switch pressed by the door
  • Makes the bay's calls itself: bay free, a person behind the truck, banned items, a growing hot spot, a pile over 4 m and the pile's age alone; load grades and smoke go to the site manager; unsure means 'check'
  • Legal in the hall: the EA fire prevention plan's 4 m pile line seen by the bay camera, the site's certified fire detection kept (BayOne is a supervisory early warning), and the whole head over the push wall, never over the bay mouth, checked in the CAD
  • Nothing added to the hall: no camera mast, no thermal head on the roof steel, no tag in the loader cab
  • Stage 2 (29 Oct 2026): buyer check (bay lights $316-345 for compact 200 mm units, Fire Rover detect-and-suppress about $200,000-235,500 plus $2,000-3,650 a month in council papers, NWRA/RRS: over 5,000 recycling facility fires a year in the US), price kept at $3,990 + $49/month; brain now the same-size Raspberry Pi 5 2 GB ($90); prices checked: $1,138 of parts per bay at qty 1, margin 66-76 % (est.); stage 2 ready

Use case

A three-bay transfer station with one loader driver and nobody in the hall at night

Site managerLoader driverOn-call personCommercial team

  1. 01Trigger: a truck reversing in, a person walking behind it, a battery in a load, a pile warming overnight, a pile getting high
  2. 02Detect: bay and approach cameras, the heat camera and the radar inside the bay's traffic light
  3. 03Act: the light's own red, amber and green aspects with a tone and a horn; the bay held until a banned item is out; a supervisory signal to the fire panel
  4. 04Log: one signed bay log per site for the site manager, the regulator, the insurer and haulers

Outcome: People kept out of the truck's way, banned items pulled before they burn, hot spots found early, piles under the line, and a photo for every load

How it works

Architecture

  1. 01

Sense: bay and approach cameras, a heat camera and a radar inside the traffic light

  2. 02

Decide: person, banned-item, load, smoke and fleet-number models and heat-growth rules on the Raspberry Pi 5; 'check' below the line

  3. 03

Act: the light's own aspects, tone and horn; a supervisory contact to the site fire panel

  4. 04

Tell: one signed log and calls to the bay app over LTE-M

Hardware

Real parts, buyable today

Bill of materials: $1,138 per bay at qty 1 with the plain signal head ($674, est.); $464 is ours; replaces the bay's traffic light (stage 2, 29 Oct 2026).

Open risks we are working on

  • Banned items buried in a load are missed: the bay sees only the surface; the loader driver's own checks stay
  • Surface heat only: deep heat in a pile still needs the site's probes, as the EA guidance warns
  • Dust and mist on the windows: the app flags a dirty window from the image and the cleaning stays in the daily check
  • Hauler disputes over load grades: grades are evidence for the operator's own rules, with the signed photo
  • BayOne never replaces the site's certified fire detection or its traffic plan
